Procedure canceled for the second time

Brazilian clubs refused to transfer TV rights to sports betting sites

The competition for Brazilian's international TV rights has failed again and will have to be redone already with the championship in progress. Sport Promotion has attempted to include online betting rights in the original deal in a last-minute move, but the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and clubs rejected the initiative. The resumption of the process was confirmed by the confederation's website. The decision implies a delay or loss of revenue for the teams of R$ 7 million (US$ 1.8m) per year.

The competition for the broadcasting international rights of the Brazilian Championship will be held for the third time by the CBF, which announced to the clubs on Tuesday (30) the cancellation of the last process, won by the company Sport Promotion.

Last week, CBF urged clubs to expand the scope of the agreement and include the transfer of images of the Brazilian championship to betting sites at the company's request, a partner of the confederation since Marco Polo Del Nero joined the entity as vice president in 2012.

On Tuesday, in a meeting with the clubs, the organization said that Ernst & Young, a leading antitrust audit, advised not to approve the change. In this way, the agreement has been broken, and a new competition process will be called already with the tournament in progress, as the first round was held last weekend.

The first competition was won by BR Newmedia. But the signing of the agreement, however, was in charge of BR Foot Media, a company that did not exist at the time of bidding and based in tax haven. Thus, the process was canceled after the company delayed the first payment agreed and gave up the deal.

In a second competition, Sport Promotion won the bidding. In a statement, Sport Promotion said that the relationship with CBF is "one that is expected among a company dedicated to sports marketing with the largest entity in Brazilian football."

Avaí’s president, Francisco José Battistotti, was at the Confederation headquarters yesterday and led the club's demonstration. He celebrated unanimity in the denial to transfer the broadcasting international rights to betting sites.

Now all parties involved must wait for the new process of competition that the Confederation will have to launch. This money is very important for the clubs, relief in time of crisis or even to give them a source of investment during the competition.
