Author of Bill 186/14 met Minister of Economy, asked Government support to legalize gaming in Brazil

Senator Ciro Nogueira (PP/PI), author of PLS 186/2014, met yesterday with Economy Minister Paulo Guedes to request government support for his proposal to legalize gambling in Brazil. In the almost one-hour meeting, Nogueira told the minister data revealing that illegal gambling raises almost R$ 20 billion (US$ 5.2bn) illegally every year. “Our goal is that the population can at least get the benefits of this practice,' said the senator.

In Block P of the Ministry of Economy and accompanied by Senator Irajá Abreu and Deputy Guilherme Mussi, Ciro Nogueira presented the Minister with a series of data showing that even banned, illegal gambling operates daily in every corner of Brazil, moving billions of dollars.

Ciro Nogueira explained that the regulation of this activity could generate more than R$ 20 billion (US$ 5.2bn) per year of collection through taxes and would be an important source of resources and job creation in a time of need in the country. According to the senator, 20 million Brazilians bet daily only on the local popular ‘jogo do bicho’.

"With the regulation of the activity, we could generate more than R$ 20 billion (US$ 5.2bn) a year in tax resources, in addition to more than 600 thousand direct jobs and many other indirect ones, which would be of great help at the time of crisis in which our country lives," commented Ciro Nogueira after the meeting.

During the meeting, the senator gave Guedes the research commissioned by Brazil’s Legal Gaming Institute in the House about the support of the deputies for approval of the gaming sector (52% of the interviewed supports the legalization). The Minister of Economy would have liked these information at a time when the Government is studying the advantages of the sector that can raise R$ 20 billion a year (US$ 5.2bn) with taxes with the opening of bingo halls, casinos and the officialization of ‘jogo do bicho’.

"We presented to the Minister key information on the benefits in collection that the legalization and regulation of gaming will bring to the country, and the potential of application of the resources. Only with the support of the government it will be possible to make these regulations viable," said the Senator.

"Gaming is already a reality across the country. Our goal is that the population can at least reap the benefits of this practice. Not having gaming is not an option, so we need to ensure that the population has a return of this activity, with resources that could make a big difference in the area of public safety, for example," concludes Nogueira.
