Brazil’s Tourism Commission approves Las Vegas technical visit to review gaming benefits

The Tourism Commission of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the proposal of José Airton Félix Cirilo (REQ 51/2019) for the technical visit of a group of its members to Las Vegas, in the United States, to know and evaluate the impacts of gaming legalization in Brazil. 'This trip will enrich the debate on the process of regulating the activity in the country that is being negotiated in the National Congress.'

Application 51/2019 was presented on May 27tht and yesterday it received the support of the Tourism Commission (CTUR), during the Regular Deliberative Meeting.

The request of José Airton Félix Cirilo, from Ceará, is based on the following justification:

“Before the discussion in the National Congress of legislative proposals that deal with the exploitation of games of chance throughout the national territory, it is of the utmost importance that this Tourism Commission can know the benefits to the country and the follow-up of the tourism generated with the legalization of the activity.

In that sense, we propose a technical visit by members of the Tourism Commission to the city of Las Vegas, in the state of Nevada in the US, as it is a world reference city in which the exploration of gaming together with its casinos promotes a great tourist attraction.

The promotion of tourism in Las Vegas through the exploitation of gaming, feeds the entire tourism productive chain, also involving hotel follow-up, attracting large resorts along with luxurious casinos.

Due to the legalization of casinos in Las Vegas, most of its economy comes from tourism and gaming technology companies. The city is recognized as one of the largest economic poles in the United States.

Knowledge of the economic system of the city of Las Vegas generated through the release of gaming and casinos will help members of the Tourism Commission to get a closer look at the means of generating employment, promoting tourism, and the economic strengthen tourism in Brazil if gambling is regulated.

In a recent event in Foz do Iguaçu on tourism, business and investments, the defense of the casinos' liberation in Brazil was clear, stating that with the regulation there will be the possibility of generating more than 600 thousand jobs in the country and raising R$30 billion (US$ 7.5bn) in taxes per year.

In Brazil, the existence of the use of unregulated gambling activities is already part of popular culture, even though it is exercised illegally, which does not contribute to the economic development of the country.

In this way, it is clear that the aforementioned technical visit by members of the Tourism Committee of the Chamber of Deputies to the city of Las Vegas will enrich the debate on the process of regulating gambling in Brazil that is discussed in the National Congress.”
