BgC 2019 - Panel "Sportsbook Lessons"

Experts debated on how to build a Betting Platform in Brazil

With Sérgio Alvarenga (Chairman of the Board of Intralot Brasil), Witoldo Hendrich Junior (Chief Legal Officer of Online IPS & Founder of Hendrich) and Percy Wilman, special adviser to Betgenius’ Genius Sports, the panel 'Sportsbook Lessons' moderated by James Kilsby, vice president for the Americas at GamblingCompliance, discussed the practices of building a Sports Betting Platform in Brazil.

One of the topics present in the panel was the question of payment methods, which led Witoldo Hendrich Junior, of Online IPS, to explain the issue of the ways that Brazil can adopt to generate credits for the gaming sector.

"In Brazil we have the bank ticket, which allows even those who do not have a bank account to enter a market until then only allowed to those with a credit card or bank account," he said.

For him, the marketing that has been made by companies in the sector, from the approval of sports betting, has been fundamental for the activity to be better recognized, and this should speed up its regulation. "The market is open and it's time for companies to make branding to make themselves known."

Sérgio Alvarenga, from Intralot Brasil, commented that the company believes a lot in the country, where it operates since 2010, and that in its evaluation the physical operation will still be relevant for a long time. "The Brazilian has a habit of playing in lottery, kiosks or other similar establishments and taking this bettor to the online betting will be a challenge of the sector, since a part of the population either does not have access to this new platforms or does not trust in the security of the online operation," he said.

For him, not just football, but volleyball and Formula 1 should attract bettors when the activity is regulated. "An important thing to be thought of by operators is that the customer should be cleared of all aspects of sports betting in order to feel safe and secure," said Alvarenga.

Percy Wilman, special adviser to Betgenius’ Genius Sports, said that while gambling and betting have been around in Brazil for a long time, it is still difficult to get to know the customer, as all transactions so far were illegal.

"Football will certainly help a lot to get to know the Brazilian bettor with the regulation of sports betting. The potential is huge and would say even greater than what exists in the American market, where the regulation is in charge of each state. In Brazil, federal regulation gives a great aspect to the operation," he said.
