IBIA reports two cases of suspicious betting alerts in Brazilian football

For the first time in its history and after its recent agreement with H2 Gambling Capital, the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) includes in its quarterly report data from eight disciplines from countries of the five continents. In its half-year report for 2019, IBIA reveals that there were 51 suspicious alerts reports in the second quarter. Just four alerts were generated from activity in South America - two each for football in Brazil and tennis in Argentina.

There were three in North America, four in South America, four in Africa, 25 in Europe, including the whole of the Russian Federation, 13 in Asia and none in Australasia.

Each of the reports is being investigated separately. It is an increase of 38% in the second quarter, compared with the first quarter of 2019, but falls well down on the second quarter of last year, by 17%

Of the 51, 25 concerned tennis, up 17 on quarter one but a 43% reduction on quarter two of 2018. The first half of the year has seen 88 alerts in all, compared with 112 at the same point in 2018.

The organisation said that the downward trend was mainly due to a continued reduction in tennis alerts. IBIA is an organization based in Brussels focused on defending sports integrity for the international betting market. The company represents and cares for the interests of at least 50 operators around the world who use their monitoring and alerting system for suspicious activities.

Tennis, which has generated the most alerts in recent quarters remained the main concern in Q2, accounting for 25 of the suspicious activity reports that were filed. However, this represents a significant drop on the 44 alerts issued around the sport in Q2, 2018, a 43% year-on-year decline.

Football ranked second with 18 alerts, while the IBIA also raised two alerts each for volleyball and esports, and one each for table tennis, pool, basketball and ice hockey.

Europe accounted for 25 alerts, with the continent generating the most reports of suspicious activity around football, with 13. Asia, meanwhile, accounted for 13 alerts, including ten for tennis. Eight of these ten were flagged for suspicious activity in Uzbekistan.
