Pedro Trengrouse began his talk by showing a video of 2011 that spoke of the great opportunities that sports betting could bring to clubs, and some leaders of the time also spoke of club interest. However, he said that the situation for clubs today has gotten worse and that the managers need to open their eyes on the issue.
“The situation of clubs today is more vulnerable because websites today don't have to pay them for using their image. Clubs need to move on this because today those who are not at the table are on the menu,” emphasized Trengrouse.
The expert also presented a chart showing that the betting companies that have sponsored Brazilian clubs after the sports betting legalization are not yet those that are part of the group of the 50 largest companies in the online gaming and sports betting market.
He explained that today the largest gaming companies investing in sponsorships are partnering with the federations and putting their brands in competitions and also announcing on TV stations that own the broadcasting rights of the championships.
About broadcasting rights, he also stated that clubs should have a stake in sports betting image rights because without sports there are no bets, and that the public content argument does not fit in football because clubs are private entities.
Concluding the lecture, Trengrouse emphasized again that clubs must move so as not to miss the opportunities that have come and to take advantage of the current moment of gaming legislation.
“There has never been such a favorable moment. The president himself said he would support state regulation of gambling. So you need to be aware of what is happening and also see your opportunities,” he concluded.
Speaking with GMB at the end of the session, Trengrouse stressed the importance of the seminar and congratulated the initiative of the São Paulo federation.
“The event was very important because it marks the beginning of the participation of clubs in the regulation of sports betting. It is the first time that a sports entity organizes an event about this bringing the authorities that deal with it and at a time when the Ministry of Economy made an opening a public consultation for society to participate. Clubs need to actively participate in this process because they are directly interested. This event was very important, really, a great goal scored by Reinaldo (president of the FPF).”
