Jefferson Preza Moreno, Mato Grosso Assistant Secretary of Tourism

“I’m in favor of casinos independent from resorts so as not to benefit only major hotel chains”

GMB follows its series of interviews with Brazil's state tourism secretaries. This time the guest is the Assistant Secretary of Tourism of Mato Grosso, Jefferson Preza Moreno. He defends the legalization of casinos in the country, whether linked to major hotel chains or not, 'because it would attract more tourists to the state, who would also know the natural attractions that exist in Mato Grosso.'

The location is privileged: it is the only Brazilian state where you can find the Pantanal, the Cerrado and the Amazon. For the secretary, with the legalization of casinos, tourists who visit Mato Grosso could go there to play and also find a rich nature, with freshwater beaches, waterfalls, and can practice extreme sports and adventure.

GMB - What is your position regarding the legalization of casinos in Brazil? What about the rest of gambling modalities?
Jefferson Moreno -
I am in favor of legalizing casinos and gambling, but regulation is needed.

Do you believe that casinos could benefit tourism from your state?
Yes, because it would attract more tourists here, who would also know the natural attractions that exist in Mato Grosso. I believe we have the potential to have casinos in the Pantanal region, Araguaia region and the north of the state, in the Amazon biome region.

Are you in favor of only resort casinos or do you think there should be physical casinos independent of the big hotels?
I’m in favor of casinos independent from resorts so as not to benefit only major hotel chains.

Is your position on casinos shared with the governor? Have you been discussing and analyzing this theme together? What about the other state tourism secretaries?
Yes, Governor Mauro Mendes and I have been talking about the subject and the viability for Mato Grosso. Regarding the state secretaries, I believe that all are favorable, as it would increase tourism.

Have you been following what happens in the Chambers of Deputies and Senators with the gambling legalization laws? Do you believe this year there will be news about this?
I have been following the Senate proposal that has been disapproved in committees but will still be referred for consideration in the Plenary. So, we have to wait.

Have you considered traveling to Las Vegas or some other city to analyze the economic benefits of casinos for the state?
Yes, if the project is approved, we intend to know how casinos work in other countries.
