Arialdo Pinho, Ceara´State Secretary of Tourism

“The legalization of casinos is a very important topic for tourism in Brazil”

In order to understand his position on the legalization of casinos and other gambling modalities in Brazil, GMB spoke exclusively with the state Secretary of tTurism of Ceará, Arialdo Pinho. He believes that releasing the operation of these ventures is positive for tourism in his state, as long as its quantity is controlled. 'The rule should be for large cities. In the case of Ceará, Fortaleza can house a casino.'

Arialdo Pinho is the founder of Beach Park, launched in 1984, which has become the largest water park in Latin America. He took over as tourism secretary in 2015 with the victory of Camilo Gomes and remained in office with the reelection of the governor. He played a key role in the development of state tourism, especially the arrival of the Air France-KLM hub and the opening of Jericoacoara Airport. He also won the National Tourism Award in December, and elected the best public manager of the country in the area.

With all his experience in tourism, the secretary states that "the legalization of casinos and other gambling modalities is a very important topic for tourism in Brazil". Also, he is always following the news of Las Vegas and Macau.

For Pinho, is not the most important thing if a casino is connected or not to a resort. "I think the rule should be one casino for each state with up to 10 million inhabitants. For example: Ceará could have one, and Sao Paulo would have four," he explains.

One of the most visited states by tourists every year, Ceará enchants with its beautiful beaches of warm blue waters. According to the Monthly Survey of Services of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the state was the fastest growing nationwide in tourist activity, reaching an increase of 9.9%, almost three times higher than the average of the country this first semester. If considered the last 12 months, Ceará remains at the top, with a 12% growth, while the national index stood at 3.5%.

“Since the second half of 2018, Ceará has had the best results in this IBGE survey. This shows that our work, to bring more direct flights and to more intensely publicize the State's attractions in the main national and international markets, has had a real effect and impact on Ceará's economy,” says Pinho.
