Google AdSense will monetize online gambling and games of chance content

Google will change the monetization policies in AdSense. Thus, online gambling and games of chance content will be monetized. The company has begun to notify email creators who monetize with AdSense. Mostly through the YouTube platform, although web pages are also included. Content with restricted sources of advertising is the main novelty. This refers to material that, as of September, is no longer a violation of Google policies.

These changes refer to AdSense's monetizable content policy, clarifying which content may be monetized and which will have “restricted sources of advertising”. At first reading, it's easy to get confused. Therefore, it is necessary to explain the main differences between the two types of content and how changes will affect content creators.

According to Google, publishers often ask for simplification and clarification of AdSense monetization policies. That's why they decided to explain the new policies and how they affect users. First, we have Google publisher policies, which refer to non-monetized content. In other words, all content that is non-monetizable will not earn any income. They are:

Illegal content

• Material related to child sexual abuse and pedophilia
• Intellectual Property Abuse
• Content of products obtained from threatened or endangered species
• Derogatory or dangerous content
• Facilitating dishonest behaviors
• Fake content
• Malicious or unwanted software
• International Marriage Agencies

Google is clear and concise, any material posted with such content violates YouTube policies and cannot be monetized. Thus, with all probability, it will be removed from YouTube as soon as it is detected. In the most flagrant cases, Google reserves the right to suspend or cancel the account if the publisher attempt to monetize content that violates policies.

Content with restricted advertising sources
Content with restricted sources of advertising is the main novelty. This refers to material that is no longer a violation of Google policies. However, in certain cases, it may cause fewer ads to show or to show none directly.

• Sexual content
• Unpleasant content
• Explosives
• Weapons
• Gun parts and related products
• Tobacco
• Recreational drugs
• Inappropriate use of alcohol
• Online gambling
• Prescription drugs and unapproved pharmaceuticals or supplements

This type of content will have restricted advertising. This means that the advertising that will be displayed will not be related to the content. If there are no “adequate sources for this inventory” advertising, no ads will be displayed.

In short, if a user attempts to monetize content included in publisher policies, they may close their account and due to violation of Google policies. In contrast, if a user tries to monetize content with restrictions on publishers, they will receive fewer ads and, at worst, none. However, it will not be working against Google policies.

The changes take efect in September. So, just wait a few days for the new policies to apply to publisher content.
