Embratur and LVS meeting in Las Vegas

Sheldon Adelson wants to invest US$ 15 billion in Brazil with casino legalization

The president of the Brazilian Tourism Institute (Embratur), Gilson Machado Neto, and the head of Las Vegas Sands Corp, Sheldon Adelson, discussed the advantages of Brazil creating a legal framework authorizing the installation of casinos integrated to resorts. At another relevant meeting in Las Vegas, Adelson explained that legalizing casinos at Las Vegas resorts and in the US has changed the city. 'The resorts/casino model can be something important and deserves to be seriously and transparently debated in Brazil,' said Machado Neto.

The Sands also said that the group is interested on investing in Brazil as they did in Asia, with possible amounts reaching US$ 15 billion. According to Adelson, it could be built casinos with convention centers and arena for over 18,000 people.

Adelson explained that legalizing casinos in Las Vegas resorts, in the United States, has changed the city. With the increase of tourism, jobs were generated and even influenced other indexes of the city as combat violence.

According to the American Gaming Association, the industry generates 1.7 million jobs, moving US$ 240 billion in the economy of the country, a value that is bigger than the entire economy of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Rafael Luisi, Embratur's Head of Strategic Management Advisory, said that the municipality will participate in the process of discussing whether or not to approve this model in the National Congress.

The President of Embratur commented that Brazil is beginning to better understand the casino resorts model and reported that the Brazilian Congress already has projects for the authorization of this model.

“It has to be made clear that this casino resort model is extremely safe. There is control so that there is no gambling addiction, especially of people with low income. Singapore held this controlled opening a few years ago and today reaps the good results of its decision,” said Adelson.

“There are cases in Singapore of 99% occupancy rate. Las Vegas is another positive example of how, controlled, the resorts/casino model can be something important and deserves to be seriously and transparently debated in Brazil,” said the president of Embratur.

“This is the time to define and we will seek to provide parliamentarians with the information they need to make the right decision and that is beneficial to the Brazilian population and the tourism sector,” Rafael Luisi, head of Embratur's Strategic Management Advisory.
