Marcelo Crivella insists on legalization

Rio de Janeiro’s Mayor once again defends installation of casinos in city’s port

Gambling has been banned since 1946 in Brazil, but Rio de Janeiro's Mayor, Marcelo Crivella, once again expressed the need to have casinos in the city. He said that “important names in the business, such those that operate in Singapore and the largest casino in Las Vegas, have already approached City Hall suggesting the establishment of a gaming venue in Port Maravilha. “Casinos are a big help to the economy and the world of tourism,” explains Crivella.

Rio’ Mayor Marcelo Crivella has again defended the installation of casinos in the city’s port. According to the politician, owners of large enterprises in countries such as the United States, especially Las Vegas, in addition to Singapore in Asia, sought the city to bring the segment back to the city.

“There have been investors here, owners of the Singaporean casino and the largest one in Las Vegas, who are very interested in building a big structure in Porto Maravilha, which would be a great help for the economy and for the whole tourism sector”, explains the mayor of the ‘Wonderful City’.

Also according to Crivella, a possible resumption of casinos would help to boost the economy and tourism of the city.

"We are fighting a lot so that Rio de Janeiro can get the National Congress approval of the law that gives us the possibility of having a casino in the city with some special license," says Crivella.

Casinos have been banned in Brazil since 1946. Some countries have adopted the business within hotels and tourist attractions known as IR (integrated resorts). This is the model that Crivella imagines and defends for Rio de Janeiro.
