Congressman expects gambling legalization in Brazil, trusts in job creation in the sector

With two bills passing through the Legislative Assembly of Paraíba (ALPB), Brazilian deputy Moacir Rodrigues awaits approval of the liberation of games of chance in the National Congress. He shared on his social networks an article that talks about the lobby for the legalization of the activity in the country, which, according to the report he shared, may be close to becoming reality.

Moacir, brother of Romero Rodrigues, Bolsonaro supporter and representative of Campina Grande in the Legislative, said he has two projects in progress at the ALPB because one deals specifically with online gaming and the other with games in general.

The article published by Último Segundo shows that since Bolsonaro was with Donald Trump, he has been thinking about the investments that casinos in resorts can generate jobs.

Moacir Rodrigues thinks the same way about job and income generation and adds that gambling is a right as well as betting on the Mega-Sena. “It is economic freedom, the right to come and go. In the same way that I have the right to play in the Mega-Sena, I can play in casinos. This prohibition was of a personal nature for Carmela Dutra (former first lady of Brazil in 1946).”

According to the IG Segundo Segundo website, a proposal along these lines was presented this year by deputy Paulo Azi (DEM-BA). The text authorizes the exploitation of games of chance exclusively in casinos established in integrated resorts and restricts the number of licenses for each city, according to the population of the municipality. The bill was integrated into another proposal that is ready to be voted on in the plenary of the Chamber.

The President of the Chamber, Rodrigo Maia, notes that there are studies that prove that the proposal to implement casinos linked to resorts and hotels in Brazil can generate up to 300,000 new jobs. Also, according to Maia, revenue for the government may exceed R$ 25 billion (US$6bn). If the project is approved, the deputy foresees the creation of 32 casinos in the country in a short period of time.

The year 2020 should have concrete news for gambling supporters. The political environment has never been more favorable and the discourse of combining economic strength with the Brazilian tourism network can be irresistible.
