After sports betting regularization

Brazilian deputy says a casinos in Amazonas would generate more revenue for the state

For the vice president of the Mixed Parliamentary Front for the Approval of the Regulation of Gaming in Brazil, federal deputy Pablo Oliva (PSL), it would undoubtedly be interesting for the state of Amazonas to have a casino, where it would serve as a tourist and economic alternative. 'It is the type of activity that moves the economy on several fronts,' comments Oliva.

The Federal Congress announced that it intends to publish a decree by March, so to finaly regulate the sports betting by fixed quota in the country. When discussing approval, the legalization of casinos in Brazil, and perhaps the construction of one in Amazonas, comes up.

For the vice president of the Mixed Parliamentary Front for the Approval of the Regulation of Gaming in Brazil, federal deputy Pablo Oliva (PSL) it would undoubtedly be interesting for the state of Amazonas to have a casino, where it would serve as a tourist and economic alternative.

“It is a successful experience in different parts of the world. It is the type of activity that moves the economy on several fronts,” said the parliamentarian who, when there are events linked to this economic engine that is gaming, brings people to visit the region.

“Casinos link with the hotels and take the whole touristic initiative, through entertainment, structures for shows and events. This moves the economy in fields that are more different than we can imagine,” said Oliva, who is in favor of the project that includes the legalization of casinos in Brazil.

According to Oliva, Bill 442 from 1991 and is ready to be voted on, but there are some sectors that are trying to paralyze voting, but says the bill is waiting too long to be regulated and the game continues to exist illegally.

“In the 1940s, gambling was banned. And I usually say that, the gambling was banned, the casinos closed, the jobs ended, the economy ended up revolving around the activity, but there is one thing that didn't end: gaming. It continues to exist, but only in an illegal way.”

And that happened after closing the gaming houses in Brazil and with the growth of the internet. Countries started virtual games that end up generating jobs, taxes and savings outside Brazil. The creation of the decree comes to give greater legal certainty to large international companies, which work with sports betting. In this way, the sector can move forward, and other companies will want to operate in Brazil. Whether through online websites or with physical headquarters.

“We close our eyes to an activity that exists either in a legal or illegal way,” emphasized the deputy, who also says that “who wants to participate in gaming will do it in any way. Gaming affects the free will of what each one wants. And free will moves the economy,” he concluded.

In an interview with Valor Econômico, Waldir Eustáquio Marques Júnior, undersecretary of Prizes and Sweepstakes at the Ministry of Economy, commented that countries such as England, Italy, United States, Greece, Portugal and Denmark have shown interest in acting in fixed odds sports betting in Brazil. But, for now, they are waiting for government regulation to the sector to avoid problems.

After going through the legal analysis phase, the expectation is that the decree will be signed by President Jair Bolsonaro by the end of the first quarter of this year.
