Why bill that legalizes casinos in Congress causes friction among Bolsonaro supporters

The legalization of casinos is still a topic of debate within Bolsonaro’s government. The president appears to have changed his position from the one showed during the campaign and would be now in favor of the opening. He has the support of many people at Ministries Esplanade, two of his sons and many parliamentarians, especially from the Centrão sector. On the other side, he faces the opposition of the Human Rights, Family and Women Minister Damares Alves, who threatens to leave the government if the issue succeeds.

Bolsonaro also has to claim an entire evangelical sector in Congress, remembering that, among the general population, that group represents one third of his vote and will be vital to be reelected. Recently, Senator Irajá completed the project that defends the development of the gaming sector and won the support of Eduardo Bolsonaro. Both have been meeting frequently to deal with this issue and are trying in vain to prevent such discussions do not come to the knowledge of those who oppose Bolsonaro. The president's other son, Flávio, has been fighting for casinos for a long time. As it turns out, the thing is moving. Irajá's proposal, formally presented and now pending among congressmen, defines that the gaming venues will operate within resorts, the so-called “integrated resorts”, and “will occupy 10% of the total area.”

The project, as soon as it started to be sewn, also began to displease the evangelical bench. Thu, it is easy to imagine how the weather is at that moment when Irajá quietly introduced it. The discord among the ‘Bolsonarists is not new, only now it threatens to explode. It was not to work hard with public money, for example, that Irajá and Flávio stayed eight days in Miami and Las Vegas where they met with Sheldon Adelson, president of the Las Vegas Sand Coorporation and biggest donor to Donald Trump’s campaign in 2016.

According to Irajá, “the legalization of casinos will attract large investors to the Brazilian tourism market.” He spoke within the tourism sector, he talked to the minister of the area, Marcelo Álvaro Antônio. He swims in the same waters as Eduardo, Flávio and Irajá - and, therefore, swims against the current of Damares.

Crisis roulette

It is not today that the minister has a clear position against the issue. It is worth remembering the April 22 meeting that originated the STF inquiry into the interference of Jair Bolsonaro in the Federal Police. Such interference, which led to Sergio Moro's departure from the government, is so scandalous that little attention was paid to the splinters exchanged at the same table between those who favor the casinos and Damares.

Minister Álvaro Antônio spoke for a while and guaranteed that his proposal was different from bingos and slot machines. Then he made Damares hellish by saying that she was “looking ugly”. The minister replied that the idea was a "pact with the devil". In the midst of the turmoil, Paulo Guedes, Minister of Economy and also against Damares, argued that there was no problem: “They are billionaires, millionaires, executives from all over the world.”

“The guy enters, leaves the money he earned the day before yesterday, drinks and leaves happy. What is known, strictly speaking, is that there are no casinos anywhere in the world that are not suitable for money laundering. This is a game played.” Damares' argument hides the real reason for her opposition and increasingly ignites dissent among those who surround the president - who under the cloth gives strength to the project. Without going into the merit of legalization, Damares' position is based only on her eternal moralism and religious fanaticism. In turn, those in the government who oppose this can only speak of numbers and economic advantages. In short, what is seen is a new consumption of hours, days and months of discussion as Brazil sinks increasingly into the addicted roulette of the social crisis.
