"With regulation sports betting should reach R$ 10 billion in Brazil"

Former footballer Enrico Nazaré, who wore shirts from Atlético Mineiro and Vasco, and also played in Europe, currently runs Leadstar Media's operations in Brazil. The company operates the ApostasBrasil.com sites and, since just a few days ago, SitesDeAposta.com, offering users information to learn how to choose the best sites on the market, have fun and even win money. “We are passionate, very experienced in business and we know the keys to success,” says Nazaré in an exclusive interview with GMB.

GMB - You were an important professional football player. How did you turn to the sports betting market? Did you prepare or study about the theme?
Enrico Nazaré - Football is my passion and hunching about match results has always been fun for me. When I moved to Sweden in 2006, I started betting more often and getting to know the world of sports betting more deeply. When I ended my career as a professional player in 2016, working with sports betting was natural, as my feeling was to share my experience and help other people who wanted to know more about the activity.

Why does Leadstar show such interest in the Brazilian market?
The Brazilian sports betting market has enormous potential, given our passion for sports, especially football. Leadstar Media's goal is to explain to people how sports betting works, so they can choose the best betting site to have fun and, who knows, profit from their sports knowledge.

Brazil is emerging as one of the largest countries in the world in the area of sports betting, even without having regulated activity. How do you see the current stage?
Betting has always been viewed with suspicion by Brazilians, given that activity in physical places has been banned since 1946. Due to lack of knowledge, many people still think that betting online is also prohibited, which is not true. I believe that with new legislation on the subject, people will feel more secure and will start to bet more and more, whether for fun or professionally.

Do you believe that we will soon have regulations and what to expect from them?
The regulation of sports betting in Brazil was scheduled to happen this year, but the pandemic that attacked the world caused the matter to be placed in the background by the government. Now, the market expectation is that sports betting will be regulated in the country in 2021. The legalization of sports betting will directly influence society and the country's economy, creating more jobs, generating income and even strengthening the country's international presence in sports, something that is quite common in Europe.

When it comes to sports betting, one thing that comes to mind is the issue of result manipulation. How to curb this practice?
Usually, the manipulation of results occurs for financial interest, in addition to attacking the nature of the sport. To curb this practice, it is essential to regularize, monitor and inspect this activity. As long as the betting regulation does not go out, the punishment for manipulating results can be made based on the Supporter's Statute. Articles 41 C, D and E speak of fraud and provide for punishment for those who offer or accept an advantage or promise of advantage for themselves or for another person based on the alteration of the result of sports competition. The penalty is 2 to 6 years of imprisonment and a fine.

Integrity is fundamental to the success of a bookmaker. How is the issue dealt with in more mature and regulated markets that can be applied to Brazil?
The law and the implementing decree define very strict provisions on the activity of controlling and suppressing illegality, with the regulator playing a central role, certifications of all betting systems and validation of each bet. It is a complex model and will have to be consolidated over time. However, the direction is certainly the right one, with a very insightful regulatory model, which takes into account all the best practices adopted in the world by gaming regulators. The Brazilian government has been taking every precaution to avoid the risk of illegality or, in any case, irregularities that can occur in such a complex market and in recently regulated environments.

What is the size of the Brazilian sports betting market today and where will we go with regulations?
The Brazilian sports betting market is among the ones with the greatest potential in the world, thanks to the size of the population and the love of Brazilians for sports. Per year, sports betting moves around R$4 billion (US$715m) in Brazil. Based on the regulations that have been discussed, the expectation is that the sector will move around R$ 10 billion (US$1.78b) per year, an increase of 150%.
