78% in favor of initiative on first day

Poll by Gazeta do Povo reflects strong support to gambling legalization

Senators who propose legalizing gambling want to hitch a ride on the ‘Renda Cidadã’ (Citizen Income) aid program to advance their projects. The idea is to use the tax revenue obtained with gambling to pay for the social program, the successor to ‘Bolsa Família’ that Jair Bolsonaro’s government wants to implement after the end of the emergency aid. Newspaper Gazeta do Povo launched a poll yesterday looking to people's opinions. On the first day, the result was overwhelming in favor of the measure.

The poll asked: “Are you for or against legalizing gambling to pay ‘Renda Cidadã’?” and it is possible to vote by clicking here. The option “I am in favor” reaches 78%, while the negative option only adds up to 22% after one day of public participation.

The legalization of gambling has returned to the Senate's agenda as an alternative to finance the social program Renda Cidadã. According to Folha de S.Paulo, there are two projects currently underway at the House, one by Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI), which allows the exploration of online or land-based gambling, and by senator Ângelo Coronel ( PSD-BA), about casinos, bingos, slots and even ‘jogo do bicho’.

The two projects will proceed together, says the newspaper, in an attempt to speed up the vote on the proposal. President Jair Bolsonaro's team seeks R$ 20 billion (US$3.55b) for the budget of the social program. The release of the gambling activity, on the other hand, should yield about R$ 50 billion (US$8.9b) a year to the government.
