Minister Garzón letter to 25 Spanish teams

"Football clubs must terminate bookmakers ad contracts at the end of the season"

The Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzón, sent a letter this Wednesday to the presidents of the 25 football clubs of the First and Second division of Spain that have signed advertising contracts for the next few years with betting companies to warn them that they must terminate those deals by end of the season. The rest of the clubs in the country's leagues also received another letter, of an informative nature, on the new regulations.

In that same letter, Garzón informed the clubs that the Ministry will bring to the Council of Ministers in the next few days the royal decree that will regulate the advertising of gambling.

Sources from the Council of State have also indicated that this advisory body of the Government delivered its opinion on the royal decree on the 20th.

According to the sources of Consumption, the State Council has set August 30, 2021 as the date for the entry into force of the ban on current sponsorships, since an immediate cancellation with the 2020-2021 season already started could lead to the bankruptcy of several sports projects.

Garzón's letter comes after several of the clubs requested moratoriums of up to three years - similar to those of the entry into force of tobacco advertising - in order to continue exhibiting their sponsorships.

A total of twenty-five clubs have received the letter, but the rest of the First and Second Division entities have also been sent another letter of an informative nature.
