Chile suspends process of granting casino operating permits for another 180 days

Chile´s Superintendency of Gambling Casinos (SCJ) decided to suspend for a period of 180 days the process of granting or renewing casino operating permits that began on July 27. This period is added to the 90-day suspension established on August 26, with which the new date of the hearing for submitting technical and economic offers will be Monday, October 18, 2021, at 10:00 am, at the Hotel Gran Palace in the capital city of Santiago.

To adopt the decision to suspend the process again, the authority took into consideration the following grounds:

  • The existence of the State of Constitutional Exception of Catastrophe due to public calamity, which remains in force to date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The "Protocol for the Management and Prevention of COVID-19 in Casinos and Gaming and Entertainment Establishments", within the framework of the "Step by Step, We Take Care of Each Other" plan, generated by the Ministries of Health and the Economy, which defines different opening steps that casinos can take.

  • Circular No. 40 of the Superintendency, of November 12, 2020, which allows the voluntary opening of casinos that are located in the communes that are in steps 3 and 4 and in a mandatory manner in step 5, which in all cases implies a reduced operation, in accordance with the aforementioned protocol.

  • The unfavorable sanitary conditions that were in view to suspend the process last August, have not ceased, also exhibiting high instability, producing advances and setbacks between the different phases in accordance with the design of the Step by Step Plan.

"This 180-day postponement seeks to ensure adequate and informed preparation by applicants and renewers to the current process of granting their respective technical and economic offers, as well as greater competition in the aforementioned process, conditions that improve income prospects fiscal, regional and communal, so it is deemed appropriate to extend the suspension of the process of granting operating permits to ensure its effectiveness,” said in an official statement the SCJ, chaired by Vivien Villagrán Acuña.
