Gaming tycoon expects legalization

Sheldon Adelson puts Vegas casinos on sale, targets Asia and Brazil

Sheldon Adelson, the gambling tycoon in the US and Asia, put his two mega casinos in Las Vegas, the Venetian and Palazzo, for sale for US$6 billion. Businessmen in the sector indicate that he will invest heavily in Macau and Singapore, but Brazil is also in the plans. He expects legalization in the country to build integrated resorts in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, according to the journalist Leandro Mazzini at Coluna Esplanada newspaper.

Adelson has traveled to Brasilia recently. His lobbyists operate strongly in the National Congress in an attempt to pass a law authorizing casinos with resorts in Brazil. He has his eye on Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

American casino giant Las Vegas Sands Corp has hired a consultant to solicit interest from potential suitors for its Las Vegas casino and hotel assets, according to Bloomberg news service.

The firm's portfolio in the city, including the Venetian Resort Las Vegas and the Palazzo and Sands Expo Convention Center, was valued at US$6 billion. The group would centralize its entire set of gambling remaining in Asia.

A sale would leave Sands entirely focused on its Asian casino portfolio in Macau and Singapore. The operator filed the plans in May to bid for the bid to run an integrated casino-resort in Japan but could target Brazil with other eyes in case of legalization.
