The NBA studies opening to bookmakers and casinos to increase cash flow

The NBA took a major hit last season, having to accommodate for COVID-19, empty stadiums, and a major drop in ratings during the Orlando restart. With the league still feeling the impact of their financial losses, executives are examining new ways to increase cash flow, which, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, would include expanded guidelines on thing slike betting, alcohol, and casinos with the goal to generate between US$80 million and US$100 million in revenue.

The League announced that the Disney World bubble costed US$ 180 million, but prevented losses of US$ 1.5 billion. Resuming the competition was an economic relief. Now, the NBA is trying to start the new season on December 22, something that is opposed by the players, who consider that date too premature and are betting on January 18, which is also Martin Luther King's day.

However, starting the competence in January would mean that the NBA stops earning around US$1 billion dollars, according to journalist Marc Stein. It is not surprising that the League tries to get money from anywhere, even if it means being open to gambling and alcohol, two economic sectors that, until now, were not considered by the NBA.

Obviously, the league is exploring all different kinds of ways they can recover from their losses, even if it means pulling back on some policies and traditions they’ve had in place for years.

Nothing is set in stone yet, and all propositions are nothing more than suggestions. But as Christmas Day draws ever closer, a sense of urgency is growing for the league, and it is expected that many decisions should be made within the next few weeks.
