"Courage needs to overcome hypocrisy", says Coronel on Brazil’s gambling legalization

Defender of the legalization of gambling in Brazil, Senator Ângelo Coronel (PSD) returned to comment on the topic on social networks. In a post, the Bahian politician stated that “Brazil loses revenue every year due to pure hypocrisy.” Coronel believes that the legalization of the sector in the country, with the construction of casinos in resort hotels and the release of games of chance in general, such as the local popular jogo do bicho, slot machines and bingo, will boost the economy.

“It is past time to face reality. Gambling exists in various modalities and are part of the daily lives of thousands of Brazilians. We need to legalize the sector in order to formalize and create jobs and enable a basic income program that will benefit almost half of Brazilians living in miserable conditions. Courage needs to overcome hypocrisy!”, said the senator, who still share the #LegalizarOsJogosSim hastag.

Coronel believes that the legalization of gambling in the country, with the construction of casinos in resort hotels and the release of games of chance in general, such as the jogo do bicho, slot machines and bingo, will boost the economy, as it would strengthen public coffers at a time of scarcity of resources.

The senator also cites the creation of thousands of jobs in the states and municipalities that would receive projects similar to the casinos in Las Vegas (United States) or Punta del Este (Uruguay). Another important point is that the “generation of resources from the taxation of gambling could increase the reach of Bolsa Família aid program from 14 million families to 22 million, still increasing the average amount received from R$ 200 to R$ 300.”

“This is equivalent to more or less R$ 50 billion in resources to fund the increase in the program. I believe that the funds raised should be used in the social area, in a basic income program, but that is up to the government's budget management. For Brazil, what matters is having the financial capacity to fund such a social program,” said the Bahian senator. The controversial topic has been under discussion in the Federal Congress for almost three decades.
