Betmotion's Angelo Alberoni spoke at Sportstech Brasil Summit

"The bookmaker is the largest investor in compliance, sports integrity and data protection"

Technology, entrepreneurship and innovation were the central themes of the Sportstech Brasil Summit held last weekend. With GMB as a media partner, startups, sports marketing companies, lawyers and bookmaker Betmotion, represented by its Country Manager Angelo Alberoni, shared the stage to offer opinions from the sector. He spoke about the explosion of sports betting brands in Brazil, sponsorships and the next regulation, highlighting the issues of Compliance and LGPD as key to the security of the bettor and the business.

Gabriel Liberati and Thiago Mansur, from TM4 Sports, one of the event's organizing companies, welcomed those registered at the Summit and thanked the event's sponsors. “There will be more than ten hours of high-quality content, in which we will discuss new technologies, entrepreneurship, innovation and many show cases in sports. I hope everyone enjoys the event and that it is enlightening and a starting point for excellent contacts,” said Thiago.

Bianca Pena presented the e-Museu do Esporte, a virtual space and platform for the creation of exhibitions, galleries and online museums focused on the preservation and dissemination of world sport in an innovative way. The museum can be visited at www.emuseudoesporte.com.br.

Visual communication, database consolidation and fan engagement were also addressed at the Sportstech Brasil Summit, in addition to aspects of training professionals in the field of sports and virtual reality, brand consolidation, integrity and compliance. There were more than 30 guests in six debates: Management and Performance, Games and eSports, Compliance and Bets, Sports Streaming, Fan-Engagement, Investment in Sportechs and Entertainment and Media.

Bernardo Itri, from the São Paulo Football Federation, spoke about innovation in football, highlighting the need to bring solutions to promote football to modernize the activity. “In 2015 we had 15 competitions organized by FPF, with more than four thousand games and less than 5% of these were broadcasted, all by external platforms, the main one being the partnership with Rede Globo for the Campeonato Paulista and Copa São Paulo. We managed to close other partnerships and started broadcasting other games on our own, and our idea was the democratization of football, giving access to fans of teams with less visibility. In 2019, we reached 1,058 games broadcasted,” he commented, noting that the innovation came from streaming partnerships, including with Facebook. "The Innovation Committee aimed to generate innovation especially in the area of marketing and communication for monetization, which is the great challenge for clubs," he explained.

Angelo Alberoni, Country Manager of Betmotion Brasil, participated with Leonardo Neri and Mariana Cechini in the debate “Compliance, LGPD & Bets”, mediated by Andrei Kampff.

Andrei commented that “when it comes to sport, the legal system, integrity and compliance are part of this fascinating world” and asked Alberoni about where to invest in the Brazilian market. The Betmotion executive commented that “in the past ten years we have seen an explosion of sports betting brands, mainly in Europe, where the issue of sponsoring the Premier League, the most important league in the world, and major brands sponsoring clubs in Spain, Italy and Portugal. We have a law for sports betting approved in 2018, and we are at an important moment because the activity is in the process of being regulated, which is being discussed by the BNDES,” he commented.

He pointed out that one of the important issues in sports betting is compliance. “We have very strict compliance to escape the false image of money laundering. This is something that harms the sport and the company behind the betting activity. The world's data companies were born to inspect sports activities for bookmakers. There are people who still think that a betting company is directly involved in fraud. Quite the opposite. The bookmaker is the largest investor in compliance, sports integrity and data protection,” he explained.

Alberoni said that the General Data Protection Law is a very interesting topic. “Betting companies work with a lot of sensitive customer data, such as bank details, credit cards and bitcoin encryption. This goes far beyond the LGPD,” he commented.

As for the investment issue during the gap between the law and the regulation of sports betting, the Country Manager of Betmotion Brasil pointed out that “today 80% of the Serie A clubs in Brasileirão are sponsored by bookmakers. We have legal limitations to talk more about betting in a more ostentatious way and even to educate fans. I think that education is the main message that a betting company can offer in Brazil. In other words, provide pre-regulation education for users,” he said.

Between the law and the regulation, according to him, “it is possible for fans to explore this sport betting entertainment, having fun and spending time. This is what we can explore in this period.”

In this sense, Mariana Cechini commented that compliance comes to bring transparency to clubs and bookmakers. “With that, people will have clarity and confidence about the activity. The application of governance and compliance by bookmakers is important, and regulation is necessary for the sector. We already have sports integrity that reinforces this transparency,” she commented.

Finally, Alberoni cited a successful case in the relationship between Betmotion and NBB. “NBB is very professional and they have very strict compliance based on NBA policies. For us, as a betting brand, we can create a series of products behind the NBB and bring basketball fans what the bet is, educating them.”

Positive balance

“In general, the Summit's balance was very positive, we had great feedbacks from several professionals in the area. Our market needs this incentive and connection so that we are able to foster startups and entrepreneurship in sports,” said Thiago Mansur, from TM4 Sports, one of the event's organizers.
