eSports arrived at Rio de Janeiro’s Student Games

The Student Games of the State of Rio de Janeiro 2020 aim to increase the participation of sports activities in all public and private educational institutions in the state. In addition, it intends to promote the broad mobilization of the whole state’s student community around sport. However, this year brought some news, such as the segmentation of eSports with competitions of chess, FIFA 2020, Fortnite and Clash Royale.

The prejudice against eSports in Brazil is still great, but little by little electronic games have conquered their space, moving millionaire numbers and with internationally recognized national representatives.

Repairing this reality, and knowing its appeal among young people, the State Department of Sports, Leisure and Youth of the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, inserted eSports as a new modality in the Student Games of the state.

“Electronic sports have become increasingly sought after by teenagers and young people. The online modality is one of the novelties of the Student Games and allows the participation of the athlete in any municipality in our State. In addition, eSports is no longer just a diversion, as there are professional championships and many athletes who already practice it as a profession,” emphasizes the Secretary of State for Sport, Leisure and Youth, Leandro Alves.

Young athletes aged 12 to 17 will be able to participate in Chess, FIFA 2020, Fortnite and Clash Royale competitions, which will be online thus facilitating the event during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The event will be a milestone at a time when so many activities are restricted. eSports, as well as virtual running and rhythmic gymnastics, will have their competitions online. For the face-to-face, protocols aligned with the sports federations and respecting the guidelines of the State Decrees will be followed,” says the coordinator of the Student Games, of the State Secretariat for Sport, Leisure and Youth, Priscilla Honório.

Registrations are free and can still be made for some modalities, through the website www.jogosestudantisrj.com.br, with the authorization of a technical and legal responsible, without the need for a direct registration of the young athletes’ school. The Student Games are held by the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, through the State Secretariat for Sport, Leisure and Youth, and are co-hosted by Spiridon and sponsored by Enel Distribuição Rio, through the State Sports Incentive Law.
