The first is that after a long time Gremio made an independent agreement from its rival Inter. In recent years, all sponsorships have been closed jointly.
The other issue is the strong entry of betting sites into the Brazilian market. Betsul itself sponsors São Paulo and the Paulista Championship. There are already 14 Serie A clubs partnering with 10 sports betting sites. For Bruno Maia, specialist in the gambling, fantasy games and sportstech market, the trend is for Brazilian football to follow the UK Premier League model, where the situation is already consolidated:
“I believe it is a path of no return, with more and more companies in this segment entering Brazil. Investments tend to continue growing a lot, and soon we will have clubs with betting brands as their master sponsor,” he says.
Lawyer Eduardo Carlezzo, who has studied this market for years, represented Brazil in what is considered one of the main congresses in the world aimed at the iGaming, sports betting and e-sports industry. He was at the end of 2019 at SIGMA, which exclusively addressed the future regulation of sports betting in Brazil, conditions of company installations and the potential of the market in the country:
“It is very important for the Federal Government to speed up the regulation of operations in the country. Although there is a forecast that a decree would be published to start activities, modifications to the law that legalized betting in Brazil may be necessary, and when we talk about legislative modification there may be a significant delay before operations finally take place,” explained Carlezzo.
In addition to Gremio, there is an expectation that rival Inter may also close sponsorship with a sports betting site in 2020.
