Betting, one of the topics of the FPF, Rodrigo Maia and LaLiga directors meeting in Spain

Reinaldo Carneiro Bastos, president of the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF), and Rodrigo Maria, president of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, met in Spain this Friday with directors from LaLiga. The meeting was part of an agreement between Spaniards and Brazilians to learn about the European country's football model and understand how the league's legal process works. Company-club, broadcasting rights, sports betting and financial fair play were the main topics of the meeting.

Rodrigo Maia, President of the Chamber of Deputies; Reinaldo Carneiro Bastos, President of the FPF; deputy Pedro Paulo; Mauro Silva, Vice of the FPF; Mislaine Scarelli, Vice President of Administration and Finance of the FPF and Pedro Daniel (EY) participated in the meeting along with representatives of LaLiga such as Javier Tebas, President of the Professional Football League of Spain; José Guerra Álvarez, general director of LaLiga, and members of the legal and international development team.

“I met today with the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia, in an extremely profitable meeting with the president of La Liga, Javier Tebas. Spanish football has come a long way with the centralization of the sale of broadcasting rights and the financial control of clubs. This is undoubtedly a model to be followed by Brazil. The success of national football depends on movements like this that LaLiga and the Spanish government conducted,” stated Reinaldo Carneiro Bastos, president of the FPF.

LaLiga’s president Javier Tebas also expressed his opinion on the matter. “It is very important for football to have an appropriate legal framework that allows the growth of this industry. Brazil, where this sport is so important, can count on all of our collaboration to turn its football into a great industry,” he said.

The agreements between FPF and LaLiga include actions related to the registration and transfer of athletes, competition areas, infrastructure and stadium security, business analytics, marketing, women's football, club licensing and sports projects that promote football in Spain and Brazil.

“It was quite discussed the company-club issue, that in Spain there was a major renegotiation of taxes in the clubs and, in return, they would have to become a company. Only four clubs, which had positive public assets and were financially healthy entities, did not need to change. They showed what happened in Spain for clubs to become a company, so it is very similar to Pedro Paulo's project,” explained Pedro Daniel (EY) to Games Magazine Brasil after the event.

“They told us about a great pillar, which is LaLiga's financial control. Financial fair play is essential for the entire industry to function sustainably. The regulatory framework is also very important, so the financial fair play here is something in focus and they demonstrated this at the meeting,” added Daniel.

Another point that is widely discussed is the commercialization of broadcasting rights. “In Spain, championships are sold centrally, that is, you buy the rights to the championship and not from each participating team. In Brazil, the rights belong to the clubs. As there is no centralization, it ends up making it difficult to standardize the product, after all there are 20 content owners and not just one. It makes not only the calendar difficult, but also the commercial properties,” concludes the Executive Director of EY.
