After president’s decree

Lottery stores reopens in Brazil to pay bills, but suspend games

After President Jair Bolsonaro updated a decree that guarantees the operation of lottery shops as essential services on Wednesday (25), these establishments reopened in several cities this Thursday morning (26). The functioning of the stores, however, will only be for services with social benefits. Lotteries will not work for games. This action is a way of not leaving a portion of the population without a bank account unattended.

According to Sincoesp (Union of Consignees of State of São Paulo), which represents workers in lottery houses, the establishments will operate for payment of bills in general, FGTS and banking services. According to the organization, this is a way of not leaving a portion of the population that does not have access to bank branches unattended. People can, with the measure, collect retirement, among other services.

The union also says that gambling services will not work, since it is a habit of the population over 60, a risk group of covid-19, that use to go to the stores to place bets. The objective, says the entity, is to avoid that this portion of people leave home to play.

Caixa Econômica Federal canceled the Federal Lottery, the oldest game with the highest number of elderly players. The union verifies the scope of the presidential decree, since there are stores in malls, establishments that are closed due to quarantine to contain the coronavirus pandemic throughout the country.

The determination is for all lottery houses to be reopened, however, in practice, it is being monitored in each municipality. The union also said that if the entrepreneur feels that he is at risk or putting employees at risk, he can, without charge, close and communicate Caixa Econômica Federal about his decision.
