The magistrate also ordered Bolsonaro to refrain from taking measures contrary to social isolation, used to prevent COVID-19, a disease caused by the coronavirus in circulation in the world. The judge responded to a request from the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), on an urgent basis.
Judge Márcio Santoro Rocha declared that the president should not issue new decrees that include as essential services those that are not provided for in law 7783, which deals with the matter. "Access to churches, religious temples and lottery stores stimulates the agglomeration and circulation of people," describes the magistrate in the text of the decision.
Still according to the magistrate, social isolation actions take place to preserve society, fight the epidemic and warned that "such measures are fundamental so that the health system - public and private - does not collapse, with an unpredictable extension of the tragic consequences this can lead to."
Jair Bolsonaro criticized the measures of social isolation, adopted at the state and municipal level, stressing that, although it is necessary to take care of the health of the population, the strong economic effect that the pandemic may cause must also be prevented.
On Wednesday last week, the Brazilian President decreed the immediate reopening of all lottery stores, which operate under federal tutelage. The next day, the measure was extended to churches of all religions.
Bolsonaro, who on several occasions classified COVID-19 as "gripezinha" (small flu) and "hysteria" (hysteria), considered religious activities and lottery places as "essential services".
