Turf professionals in Brazil ask for races return but JCB keeps activity suspended

The association of turf professionals in Rio de Janeiro requested the return of races at the Gávea racecourse. The entity’s argument is that they survive on commissions, and therefore, without races, their families suffer a negative financial impact. In spite of this request, the Jockey Club Brasileiro announced that it decided to keep the Lagoa Headquarters and all establishments closed indefinitely.

Jockeys, coaches and other workers of the activity claim to hold at least one weekly meeting, just like what has been happening in São Paulo at the Cidade Jardim racetrack.

The association of turf professional in Rio de Janeiro sent a letter addressed to the president of the Brazilian Jockey Club, Luiz Alfredo Taunay, requesting the return of the races at the Gávea racetrack.

In spite of this request, the Jockey Club Brasileiro announced that it decided to keep the Lagoon Headquarters and all establishments of the entity closed indefinitely.

A similar closure measure is being adopted at the Central Headquarter, with the exception of the garage, which for now remains in operation. JCB clarifies that maintenance and cleaning of the club's facilities will continue.

The decision seeks to aim and preserve the well-being and safety of its associates, employees, and public, as well as their families, and in compliance with the provisions of Decree No. 46,980, of March 19, 2020 of the State of Rio de Janeiro. In the event of a change in the COVID-19 pandemic scenario, this decision will be reconsidered.

“We reiterate the recommendation to follow the guidelines of the World Health Organization and the other competent authorities, seeking to avoid agglomerations and maintaining care with personal hygiene. We hope to count on the collaboration of all and in this way assist the Public Power and the Brazilian society in the fight against this pandemic,” says the official website of the entity.
