Macao gaming revenues fall 79.7% in March

Gaming revenues in Macau fell 79.7% in March, compared to the same period in 2019, a month when measures to contain the outbreak of COVID-19 practically closed the borders of the city. The data released by the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau (DICJ) also indicate a 60% decrease in the first three months of the year, after having recorded historical losses in rents in February, a month in which the casinos were closed for 15 days.

Macau gross gaming revenues have dropped by 79.7% year-on-year in March 2020 to US$651.2 million,according to information revealed today by the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau (DICJ).

The first three months of the year reported US$ 3.8 billion in accumulated gaming results, a 60% year-on-year decrease, with the COVID -19 epidemic taking a considerable toll in the local gaming sector.

Last month has seen an increase in imported COVID -19 cases in Macau and Hong Kong with several restrictions on travel and quarantine measures imposed by the two SARs.

On March 26, Guangdong authorities also announced that all arrivals from outside of mainland China, including Macau and Hong Kong residents, will be subject to a 14-day quarantine and coronavirus testing.

Macau has so far reported 41 confirmed COVID -19 cases, with most registered in the last two weeks.
