Colombian bookmakers urged to make increased contributions

Colombian Professional Football’s Major Division (Dimayor), the organisation in charge of football leagues in the country, has urged the government to ask for increased financial contributions from bookmakers associated with national gambling regulator Coljuegos. A letter addressed to Colombia’s president reveals that Dimayor wants bookmakers to keep charging the health sector 7% of their income, in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis.

The firm also insists, however, that these companies send additional funds to the Ministry of Sports, particularly to support its football sector.

The correspondence read: “Taking into account that sports betting companies and gambling operators have permission from Coljuegos to operate by making unauthorised use of our brands, names and images, we respectfully request the collaboration and intervention so that the government can take the necessary steps to allocate a percentage of the income obtained from operations in Dimayor’s favour.”

The organisation emphasised its commitment to the unions and asked a virtual meeting to work together and find a solution to help mitigate the effects that COVID-19 “is having on the 50 thousand families that depend on Columbia’s football.”

The news follows Coljuegos and CORNAZAR’s appeal to the government to be part of three separate credit schemes that offered financial assistance to the crisis-affected private sectors. Coljuegos demanded access to BANCOLDEX’s credit line “Colombia responds.”
