Clubs from Brazil to announce on Friday sale of international TV rights and betting sites

In a teleconference held this Tuesday (14), the Serie A clubs resolved to announce the sale of international broadcasting rights of the Brazilian Championship next Friday (17). The teams discuss three proposals to sign a contract by the end of 2023. Three companies are in the running and two will be selected. The proposals include rights to broadcast on TV and on betting sites. In financial urgency due to the COVID-19 crisis, clubs need to close an agreement right now.

The negotiations advanced during a meeting between the National Club Commission (CNC) and the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation). There were five offers on the table, but three remained after the videoconference between the officers.

UOL Esporte found that the clubs ignored the financial issue, even refusing higher values, in order to consolidate the brands abroad in the medium term. The remaining proposals have no representative values, according to sources linked to the meeting.

Three companies are in the running, and two of them will be selected. Two Brasileirão properties were divided: broadcast on TV and on betting sites. Interested more in exposure than necessarily in money at this first moment, the clubs intend to close a four-year contract. In the renovation, in 2024, they would require a more substantial amount.

However, all participants in the meeting agreed that the ideal is to work with a company that gives more visibility outside Brazil. Despite the presence in the conversations, CBF has no active voice in the matter. The deal comes down to the teams' decision.

The payment dates for the commercialization of international broadcasting rights vary according to the proposals. The amount will be paid in advance in all cases, but the dates are not specified. The attempt to close an international broadcasting rights contract for the Brazilian Championship returned to the clubs' agenda during the quarantine due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus.

Teams are in a hurry for any amount that may fall into their respective bank accounts at this time. The process is led by the president of Bahia, Guilherme Bellintani, and by members of the marketing departments of other major clubs.

On the other hand, the CBF and the CNC have 35 different alternatives for hosting the Brazilian Championship 2020, including games for straight points and knockout decisions. The options are for the tournament dispute starting in May and until the last months of this year.

The number of models discussed by entities and teams is reduced as time passes and the development of the new Coronavirus pandemic. The parties are still talking to health officials in the country and the states involved in order to agree on possible dates. There is still no definition about the beginning of the main national competition.

After approximately four hours of debate, most clubs in the main divisions of the Brasileirão have decided to extend the players' vacation period by another ten days. For now, Flamengo, Vasco and Botafogo are exceptions because they are waiting to unfold the conversations with the Football Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FERJ).

Strategically, the decision is important for CBF because it is possible to draw up calendar models considering the entire December period as useful. It is not absurd to imagine a boxing day in Brazil, similar to what happens in England: games on December 26th.
