Colombia resumes gambling operation under strict conditions of sanitary security

In the wake of the health emergency generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the gambling sector has been seriously affected in Colombia, as it several other international markets. In view of this situation, Colombia’s National Government issued a decree in which measures are adopted so that companies can operate again, once the quarantine ends, under strict conditions of sanitary security.

As has happened worldwide, the gaming sector has had problems in cash flow to meet obligations with the operating and administrative costs of the activity, due to the suspension of lottery draws and the provisional closure of casinos. This is stated by the Colombian Federation of Luck and Random Game Entrepreneurs (Fecoljuegos).

This situation has made it difficult for companies of the sector to pay the exploitation rights, resources that are transferred to the health of Colombians and to the country's public finances.

In view of this situation, the National Government issued a decree in which measures are adopted so that companies can operate again, once the quarantine ends, under strict conditions of sanitary security.

As established, the operators of the gambling sector, in coordination with the entities that administer the activity and the country's health authorities, will adopt protocols for the prevention of spread of the COVID-19 to conduct draws, for the reactivation of tickets sale or credits for participation in the points of sale, and for the opening of commercial gaming venues.

"The opening of commercial venues must be subject to the capacity and social distancing measures defined for this purpose by Coljuegos and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection,” states the decree.

In addition, gaming operators may request a temporary decrease, from the lifting of the suspension of contracts measure and for up to six months, of the number of gaming elements authorized in concession contracts, taking into account the gauging restrictions that are adopted for the opening of the premises.
