Célio Avelino, criminal lawyer

"Gaming legalization in Brazil should not involve religion, but the market"

In the ‘Debate da Super Manhã’ radio show, the legalization of bingos, casinos, jogo do bicho, internet betting and slot machines was discussed. The project that decriminalizes the activity as a source of jobs and tourism is currently on the agenda among politicians. For this reason, communicator Geraldo Freire discussed the matter with criminal lawyer Célio Avelino. 'I don't see it as a serious argument to ban gambling,' he argued.

During the show, presenter Geraldo Freire talked to criminal lawyer Célio Avelino about the consequences of legalizing gambling in Brazil. Avelino pointed out that there are several types of addictions, including legal activities in the country and stressed that the Brazilian territory is the only non-Islamic member of the OECD to criminalize the activity.

“Regarding gaming, Brazil is against the most developed countries in the world. Among the 193 UN member countries, 75.52% have already legalized it. Of the 34 countries that are part of the OECD, only three have not allowed the activity, of which only Brazil is a non-Islamic country. So I don't see it as a serious argument to ban gambling,” argued the criminal lawyer.

Avelino also discussed the benefits generated by the installation of casinos. “Everyone who wants to play, plays online and the money goes out, it doesn't stay here. If you legalize the casino, you will have tourism development in the region, provide jobs and raise billions of reais per year.”

“Evangelical and Catholic benchs are against it, but this should not involve religion or ideology, but the market. The money raised from gaming can be invested in health, education, city development and the country would make a profit,” he concluded.
