In the midst of mandatory preventive isolation

Colombia authorizes some lotteries, key to generate resources to health sector

According to the Colombian President Iván Duque, this Monday (27) the gradual reactivation of some sectors begins within the framework of the quarantine in the country. In this context, some lotteries are exempt from Decree 593, which provides for mandatory preventive isolation until May 11. 'Many of the resources they generate are important to the health sector,' said Duque.

President Iván Duque, together with the Governor of Cundinamarca, Nicolás García, and the Minister of Commerce, José Manuel Restrepo, answered questions about the new measures related to activities allowed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a new resolution, the Executive Power of Colombia establishes 41 items of products and services that may resume commercial activities, "with compliance with biosafety protocols." Among them are “games of luck and chance (lotteries and chance),” as established by the government.

The Colombian authorities emphasized that "a de-escalation" of the quarantine is being planned in their territories, to allow part of the economy to be reactivated under the protocols issued by the National Government.

Decree 593, in two specific points, approves the reactivation of the “operations of games of luck and chance in the form of novel and territorial permanent bets, chance and lottery” from Monday, April 27. For now, bingos, casinos and video game houses are out of the exception.

"Some lottery services are being opened, especially chance, among other things because many of the resources obtained from these activities, which also have a distance measure, are important for the health sector," commented the President.

Duque also announced that technical commissions for trade activation are already being formed. According to the President, the Government seeks to expand the dialogue with the regional leaders to formulate a proposal that guarantees that this operation can take place under conditions that reduce the risk of contagion.
