Jogo do bicho, illegal bingos and casinos cut 50% of 'employees' salary

According to the blog of journalist Ancelmo Gois in O Globo, the effects of the pandemic reached Rio’s contraventions. With less movement, illegal bingos and casinos - which used to be frequented mainly by the elderly - and jogo do bicho points of sale have already warned “employees” that there will be a sharp cut in salaries: at least 50%. The legal modalities of gambling such as lotteries, turf and sports betting also face the consequences of the crisis.

Beyond the drop in the collection of illegal gambling in RJ that Gois talks about, the reality indicates that legal activities are also suffering the hard time in Brazil. Most of Caixa’s lotteries are suspended for three months and a similar scenario occurs in the turf segment, where there are only isolated competitions at the Cidade Jardim racetrack. In time of coronavirus, São Paulo's turf can be considered the stronghold of resistance in Brazil.

In parallel to the impact on the daily life and health of the world population, the coronavirus also raises concern among sports betting operators, who are studying the entire transformation in the sports calendar. The year 2020 began with the promise of the sports betting market to take off. Many countries, such as Brazil, were expected to legalize this market - which may still be the case.

However, the international coronavirus pandemic has impacted precisely the main sports competitions, the ones that attract more audiences. Some championships have been postponed, but the situation is still uncertain. This is the case of football championships in Germany, England, Spain, Italy, Portugal and also the continental competitions. Currently, only Belarus maintains the football tournament in Europe.
