Minas Gerais Lottery contributes with more resources to fight COVID-19 in Brazil

State Health Fund (FES) will receive an additional R$ 33 million (US$5.7m) to face the pandemic after a decree announced by Governor Romeu Zema. For the opening of the supplementary credit to FES, it will be used funds from the financial balance directly collected from the Lottery of the State of Minas Gerais, which has been operating with Intralot Brasil since 2010. FES is responsible for several actions related to the Program to Confront COVID-19 Pandemic Effects.

Resources in the order of R$ 33 million (US$5.7m) will be allocated to the State Health Fund (FES) to face the COVID-19 pandemic. A Decree with this objective (Decree 215, of May 8, 2010) was published in the Official Gazette of the State last Saturday (9), informed the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais (ALMG).

To open the supplementary credit to FES, it will be used funds from the financial balance of Directly Raised Resources from the Lottery of the State of Minas Gerais.

The FES is responsible for several actions linked to the Program to Combat the Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic, created by Law 23.632, of 2020.

In addition to creating the program, this law authorizes the opening of a special credit of up to R$ 260.4 million (us$45m) to the State Fiscal Budget in favor of the units involved in combating the pandemic. It also allows the use of parliamentary amendments for actions to fight the disease, increasing the contribution to approximately R$ 300 million (US$52m).

The legislation passed in ALMG as Bill 1.750/20, authored by Governor Romeu Zema, approved in a single shift and on an urgent basis, on April 1, through remote voting.

Operating with Intralot Brasil since 2010, Loteria Mineira is an example of a highly profitable, resource-generating and highly sympathetic public institution, entirely independent of government funds. It is one of the few bodies that, in addition to being autonomous, is a fundraising center for important social works.

By allocating part of the profit obtained from games to government social works, Loteria Mineira provided the opening of schools, daycare centers, hospitals, in addition to sanitation and urbanization works. Since its creation, Loteria Mineira has been an instrument for generating jobs, income and economic circulation for the State of Minas Gerais.
