To avoid crowding and queues

Rio de Janeiro prohibits betting on lottery shops in the city

Mayor Marcelo Crivella announced on Monday morning a ban on betting on lottery shops in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The measure, valid as of today (Tuesday), is to avoid crowds and queues, especially by the elderly. Meanwhile, payments and receipts continue normally. “Lotteries work by giving benefits, receiving bills, but without bets. Whoever wants to place a bet can do it via the Internet,' said Crivella.

The city’s mayor announced other measures on Monday, such as a ban on circulation in shopping centers in busy neighborhoods, such as Madureira, Tijuca, Pavuna and Santa Cruz.

"We saw in the curve that marks us that we had an increase in cases now in the beginning of May. Some think it would have been for the holiday of May 1, when people left the house and took a holiday also from the mask, from the quarantine," he stated.

"We saw in the curve that we had an increase in cases in early May, so the measures were taken," said Crivella. "Our entire effort is to take balanced measures, to preserve essential lives and activities in trade," he continued.

"We ask for the contribution that this week there is no game every day, so without betting on lotteries. They work by giving benefits and receiving bills, but without face-to-face bets," said Crivella. Family members of the elderly who have the habit of placing bets on lottery stores celebrated the measure.

The following are some of the other restrictive measures announced by the City:

• Prohibition of "access of private vehicles of non-residents to the central regions of the following neighborhoods, in addition to the respective sidewalks: Santa Cruz, Parish Jacarepaguá, Taquara Jacarepaguá, Realengo and Guaratiba in the West Zone; Tijuca - Praça Saens Pena, Grajaú, Pavuna, Cascadura, Madureira and Méier, in the North Zone ".

• Prohibition of "placing face-to-face bets at lottery agencies".

• Veto of "private vehicle parking on the city's waterfront, between Leme and Pontão beaches, except for vehicles owned by owners who live nearby".

• Prohibition of the "operation of bars (until then, they could open for delivery)".

• Prohibition of "opening all trade in the communities of the City, with the exception of supermarkets and pharmacies".

• Prohibition of "carrying out works, with the exception of emergency ones, thus understanding those essential to the proper functioning of the facilities"
