Decision is up to the Ministry of Public Health

Uruguay prepare strict protocol aiming to reopen all its casinos

Two months after the Uruguayan government decided to close the gaming venues during the health emergency caused by the pandemic, Casinos del Estado will present this Friday (15) a protocol to reopen doors in the so-called 'new normal' due to COVID-19. The goal is for all casinos in the country to be reopened.

This Friday (15), Casinos del Estado -which currently gathers 32 gaming rooms throughout the country- is introducing a protocol to reopen all casinos in the country after being closed due to the arrival of COVID-19. To enter, both public and officials must do so with masks and after their temperature is controlled.

"We are finishing the protocol. It has already been presented to the gaming room’s union, we have received their comments on it, and we are making new contributions. On Friday this week we will send it to the Ministry of Public Health (MSP)," told Gustavo Anselmi, general director of Casinos del Estado, to El País newspaper.

"After the MSP responds, it will go to the expert committee and they will say when t will be possible to get back to normal in casinos. Today I don't have a date, that depends on them," Anselmi added.

The protocol was established in agreement both by the General Directorate of Casinos and by the private ones. The idea, according to what Anselmi explained, is to reopen with "50% of the capacity", that is, with half the public allowed for the venues.

The significant decrease in public within the premises will not be the only variable. The protocol also establishes that the gaming machines will be separated from each other in order to comply with certainty with the social distancing recommended by the government.

In addition, to enter the casinos, people must comply with strict hygiene measures. "At the entrance there will be a stand with alcohol gel and a mat to wipe off the footwear. All those who enter, public and officials, will have to do it with face masks. Furthermore, everyone will get their temperature controlled," Anselmi added.

The casinos, which have been out of operation for almost two months, have 1,100 employees of which 950 of them are dedicated solely to the gaming halls.

Anselmi stated that the objective of Casinos del Estado is "to open them all, unless the MSP establishes otherwise."
