Announcement by President Pedro Sánchez

Official: Spain’s LaLiga will return on the week of June 8

Pedro Sánchez, president of Spain, announced on Saturday that the country’s football league will resume on June 8, when there are eleven rounds to be played. The issues concerning the timetable have not yet been clarified. 'The ball will roll again with guarantees for footballers,' said Sanchez. Football would return on Friday, June 12, with an attractive game, the Sevilla- Betis derby. Bookmakers awaited this news with great anticipation.

President Pedro Sánchez announced this Saturday, in his weekly appearance on the COVID-19 crisis, that LaLiga will resume from Monday, June 8.

"With the support of the Superior Sports Council, the green light has been given for the professional football league to be held again, starting on June 8," said Sánchez.

LaLiga and the majority players' union, AFE, met on Friday last week to finalize the details of the return of the competition, aiming at the mentioned week at the expense of the approval of the Ministry of Health.

Eleven rounds to go and questions regarding the calendar have not yet been clarified, as LaLiga and the Spanish Federation maintain differences over the game dispute on Mondays.

It also needs to be resolved whether players will be confined for health reasons, as clubs are opposed to concentrations in hotels or sports facilities for weeks.

Therefore, with the confirmed dates that LeLiga’s president Javier Tebas planned to resume the competition, LaLiga and AFE will meet this week to come to terms with the open points.

The Spanish League has been interrupted since March 12, due to the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, when, after 27 rounds, the double champion FC Barcelona led the competition, with 68 points, two more than Real Madrid.

"Green light so that, starting the week of June 8, La Liga and the most important sporting competitions will resume," said Sánchez, adding that "the ball will roll again" with guarantees for footballers.

The return of the Spanish championship will occur after the Portuguese I League, which is scheduled for June 3, and the German one that has already been resumed, on May 16, with strong restrictions.

After the Bundesliga, Spain becomes the second country in the top five European leagues to schedule the last games of the 2019/20 season, while English and Italians still await a 'green light' from their respective Governments and local health authorities to set the timetable remaining. The pandemic has already led to the cancellation of football championships in France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Scotland.
