Senator Roberto Rocha defends casinos in Brazil to reactivate post-pandemic economy

The Senator, who is the leader of the PSDB in the House, told O Antagonista website that the country is an island surrounded by casinos and that the activity can be a source of employment and foreign exchange that now goes to other countries in the region. “In South America, Brazil is an island surrounded by casinos on all sides. We are the only ones that do not have them, except clandestine ones,” said Rocha, author of several projects to legalize gaming.

Senator Roberto Rocha is the author of one of several projects that try to legalize the gambling market in Brazil. The proposal of the legislator that was born in the state of Maranhão provides for the exploitation of casinos exclusively in resorts and in the Northeast region. The model is similar to what has been discussed at the Ministry of Tourism.

“After the pandemic, this could be a considerable source of jobs. About 150 countries have casinos. In South America, Brazil is an island surrounded by casinos on all sides. We are the only ones who do not have them, except the clandestine ones. The evasion of foreign exchange with Brazilian players going to Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, United States is considerable. Job evasion, too,” Rocha told O Antagonista website.

In January, it was revealed that Flávio Bolsonaro, son of the President of the Republic, was part of an Embratur delegation that went to Las Vegas – in an official trip paid with public money - to deal with the legalization of gambling in Brazil.

Federal deputy Silas Câmara has already said that "there is no arrangement capable of convincing the evangelical group [led by him] to review its position" contrary to the topic. Jair Bolsonaro himself has publicly said, more than once, that there is no chance of legalizing casinos during his government, but the president has been courted to change his mind.
