Lotteries increased 22.4% during 1Q in Brazil compared to 2019

Caixa Econômica Federal released the results of the first quarter of 2020 lasst week. The good news was that lotteries collected R$ 4.0 billion (US$723m) in the first quarter of this year, 22.4% higher than in the same period last year. The state-owned bank recorded net income of R$ 3 billion (US$ 55m) in the period; which represents a drop of 22.2% compared to the same period in 2019 (R$ 3.920 billion -US$708m-).

Even with the social isolation imposed since March 16 due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the CAIXA Lotteries raised R$ 4.0 billion (US$723m) in the first quarter of this year, 22.4% higher than that registered in the same period of the year, which was R$ 3.3 billion (US$596m).

Among the resources collectd in this period, approximately R$ 1.5 billion (US$2.71b) were allocated to Federal Government social programs in the areas of social security, sports, culture, public security, education and health, which corresponds to 37.2% of the total collected.

Other numbers

CAIXA's recurring net income reached R$ 3 billion (US$ 55m) in the first quarter of 2020. With this result, return on assets totaled 0.93% and return on equity 14.40%, with growth in 12 months, 0.14 pp and 2.0 pp, respectively.

The gross result of financial intermediation reached R$ 8.6 billion (US$1.55b), with emphasis on the 12.1% reduction in funding costs in relation to the same period of the previous year, reflecting the behavior of the basic interest rate and the management strategy resource sources.

The Bank also released data on the payment of emergency aid. In the first installment of the aid, R$ 37.1 billion (US$6.7b) was credited to 52.3 million people, and in the second installment R$ 12.8 billion (US$2.31b) was credited to 18 million people.

Up to last May 21, 101.2 million registrations were made, with more than 1 billion visits to the site and more than 190 million calls at central 111. The Emergency Aid application had 87 million downloads and the ‘CAIXA Tem’ application had 95.7 million downloads. In addition, 40.6 million digital savings accounts were opened, being the largest banking inclusion action ever carried out in Brazil.
