Puerto Rico will issue licenses to operate slot machines

The Puerto Rico Gaming Commission will begin to distribute the applications that must be completed by those interested in obtaining a license to operate slot machines. This was reported by the entity's executive director, José Maymó Azize, who assured that strict control mechanisms will be established over the operation of this business. For its part, the casino sector asked the government to allow the reopening of gambling halls that remain closed due to the COVID-19 crisis.


"As part of the process, after the approval of the Regulations for the Issuance, Management and Inspection of Licenses of Gaming Machines on the Road and the Regulations for the Operational Inspection and Interconnection of Gaming Machines of Chance, our team carries out the necessary procedures for the adoption and delivery of the corresponding applications for different types of licenses in this sector, the mechanism for collecting rights for them, the control of the machines and the interconnection of these to a centralized system," said Maymó Azize.

The executive director of the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission stated that the inspection of said machines will be as stipulated in Act No. 11 of August 22, 1933, as amended, known as the “Gaming Machines Act.”, after the amendments introduced to it by Law 257-2018 (Tax Reform) and Law 81-2019 (Law of the Gaming Commission of the Government of Puerto Rico).

In accordance with the statute, "the Commission will confiscate and dispose of any adult entertainment machine that operates without licenses, with an expired license, with a license issued for another machine or that operates in violation of this Law." It also establishes that the Commission can administratively punish for violations of its orders and regulations. Fines range from $ 5,000 to $ 10,000 or one-year jail terms.

On the other hand, Miguel Vega, former president of the Board of Directors and president of the Casinos Committee of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of Puerto Rico (PRHTA), reiterated his request to the government to include in his new executive order permission to that casinos can reopen after the closure caused by the emergency of COVID-19.
