Fluminense and Botafogo against the initiative

Rio’s football federation and most state clubs plan to resume games later this week

The Football Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Ferj) is meeting today (5pm) having as its main item on the agenda the possibility of resuming the Carioca (state) Championship this week. The clubs will gather via videoconference: Botafogo and Fluminense are against the return of the competition, while Ferj and all the other 12 clubs are in favor. As Fluminense has not even performed serological tests in its squad, the team could not go to the pitch and would lose points due to the application of W.O.

This is the referee's agenda for this Monday (06/15):

  1. Health certificate from the club delegation (passport) established in the Safe Game protocol (phase 2): model, content and responsibility.
  2. Extra Tournament (§ 2 of art. 50 of the REC).
  3. Substitutions.
  4. Number of non-professional athletes.
  5. Registration and Registration (art. 21 and 36 of the REC).
  6. Registration of athletes by a different association than the one that played in the same championship.
  7. Matters pertinent to the conclusion of group Z.
  8. Other matters pertinent to the complementary matches of the Carioca Championship that can be discussed by a favorable preliminary decision of the majority.

The idea of those who are in favor of the return of the state tournament is to establish in today’s meeting games for Thursday or Friday of this week, with one or two matches played per day. This plan was discussed in more detail in an unofficial meeting last Saturday that did not include the presence of Botafogo and Fluminense - both claimed that they had learned of the fact by the press. The "surprise meeting" heated up the mood for this Monday's referee.

If this scenario is approved, for example, the tendency is to force the application of W.O. (walkover) to Fluminense. This is because, in addition to the fact that they have not returned to face-to-face training, the ‘tricolor’ board has not even carried out serological tests in their squad, which will happen on Tuesday. As the results of the exam take a week to be ready, the club could not go to the pitch without knowing if it has infected players.

Botafogo is more advanced in this regard, but it is another one that is not comfortable to resume face-to-face work. The club does not have an official return date to work at its Nilton Santos training center. However, it has already carried out tests of COVID-19 -the results will be in the next few days- and installed a bio-decontamination tunnel in the stadium and training center.

In turn, Flamengo is the club that has been training in the field for the longest time: since May 20. The red-black club has been testing players and staff once a week. In the most recent, last Monday, it reported that there were no positive cases of COVID-19. Vasco, who has been training since the beginning of June in São Januário, 14 of the 16 players who had tested positive for coronavirus at first appeared again on Tuesday, which was when coach Ramon Menezes had the squad almost complete for the first time . The club works with the possibility of facing Macaé next Saturday.

Among the state small teams, like Bangu, Portuguesa-RJ, Madureira and Boavista, they have also been training for at least a week. Cabofriense, in turn, marked the return to work of its squad for this Monday.
