New bill proposes to use uncollected lottery prizes to combat COVID-19 in Brazil

In order to resolve a critical point in the Brazilian public health system, such as lack of respirators (pulmonary ventilators) and personal protective equipment (PPE), new Bill 3341 authored by Senator Rose de Freitas (PODEMOS/ES), suggests to use uncollected lottery prizes funds to help fight the pandemic. It was a relevant amount of R$ 331.9 million (US$64.2m) in 2019, according to data from Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF).

The increasing numbers of deaths and infected by the new coronavirus were a warning to Senator Rose de Freitas (PODEMOS / ES). According to her, "it is not acceptable for patients to die due to the lack of mechanical ventilation equipment, which is absolutely necessary in more serious cases, and for health professionals to be contaminated by lack and protective equipment, such as masks and appropriate medical clothing.”

As a solution to tackle the pandemic, Rose proposed to the Senate that, during this time of public calamity, the proceeds of unclaimed lottery prizes be allocated to actions to combat the COVID-19. These funds will be used exclusively for the acquisition of pulmonary ventilators and personal protective equipment (PPE).

"To face this situation, it is urgent to allocate resources to meet these needs of the public health system. One possibility that we present is the allocation of funds from unclaimed lottery prizes for this purpose. It was a relevant amount of R$ 331.9 million (US$64.2m) in 2019, according to data from Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF),” justifies the senator.
