ATP and WTA announce return of tennis in August with two Grand Slams on calendar

International bookmakers slowly begin to receive good news about the return of the main sporting events in the world to normalize their offer. Now the professional tennis announces the return to activity. Women’s (WTA) and men’s (ATP) circuits, both suspended from March, will be resumed in August 3, in Palermo, and August 14, in Washington, respectively, according to officially revealed calendars.

Roland Garros' Parisian Grand Slam, normally played between May-June and which had to be postponed, will start on September 27 to allow the Masters 1000 in Madrid (September 13) and Rome (September 20) to also be played.

At the ATP circuit, after the Washington tournament, the Cincinnati Masters 1000 (August 22) and the US Open (August 31) will be played, both with New York as the venue.

Roland Garros will mantein its qualifying prior to the main event, which will start on September 21, while the US Open has chosen to remove this initial stage this year.

Palermo, the capital of Sicily, will host the return of women's tennis with an International tournament, the smallest category in the WTA. Next, New York will receive Cincinnati’s Premier Mandatory (equivalent to the men's Masters 1000) and the US Open.

This schedule is "provisional", as it depends on "fluctuating" health conditions and measures taken by governments, explained the ATP and WTA. So far, the schedule for the resumption of professional tennis foresees disputes until Roland Garros men's final, on October 11.

"ATP continues to study all options for adding ATP 500 and 250 tournaments if circumstances permit," added the entity. ATP foresees an update of the calendar in mid-July "with an eventual Asian season before the European indoor circuit", which would include the ATP Finals in London.

The WTA published its calendar until the end of the year, with the Finals scheduled for November 9 in Shenzhen, China. In the coming weeks, ATP and WTA will decide what to do with their world rankings, which have been frozen since March.

The ATP competition calendar will begin on August 14, with Washington ATP 500, in USA. The country will also host two other tournaments in a row, the Cincinnati Masters 1000 and the US Open Grand Slam, respectively starting on August 22 and 31. All will be done without the presence of the public.

After the USA, the tour goes to Europe: on September 8, the ATP 250 in Kitzbühel, in Austria; the Masters 1000 in Madrid, Spain on September 13; the tournament in Rome and the Grand Slam Roland Garros, in Paris, France, starting September 27. So far, spectators - with reduced capacity - have been confirmed only in Paris.
