Betsson names ex Paddy Power’s CEO as new non-executive director

Betsson AB has been working to improve its advice on governance by naming former Paddy Power’s CEO, Andy McCue, as new non-executive director. His appointment follows the conclusion of firm’s AGM, where the online gambling group re-elected all members of its existing board led by Chairman Patrick Svensk. Betsson increased its international investment in 2020 by acquiring a majority stake in Brazilian Suaposta.

A ten-year senior Paddy Power executive, McCue served as the last Chief Executive of the Irish legacy bookmaker in 2015, guiding the firm through its £5bn merger with Betfair, a record-breaking industry deal that formed FTSE100 Paddy Power Betfair.

In 2016, McCue chose to move away from gambling, taking the lead of The Restaurant Group Plc, overseeing Wagamama‘s £ 550 million acquisition. He left the Restaurant Group at the beginning of 2019, citing ‘extenuating personal circumstances,’ having been replaced by former executive Andy Hornby of Gala Coral and GVC Holdings.

McCue joins Betsson as corporate governance launches its structural restructuring plan in which it aims to diversify the make-up and industry offerings of Betsson’s market position.

Betsson increased its international investment in 2020 by acquiring a majority stake in the Brazilian betting operator Suaposta.

The Swedish giant insists that a B2B sportsbook branch will be introduced in 2020 to optimise the technological resources of the company. The B2B timetable of the company, however, was disrupted by the unexpected circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, thus cancelling the global sports calendar.
