Agenda with Minister Paulo Guedes

Focused on job creation, deputy Bacelar again defends gaming legalization in Brazil

Recent statements by Brazil’s Economy Minister Paulo Guedes that the regularization of bingo, casinos and other gaming modalities can be “bold and interesting” encouraged the betting sector and also the general coordinator of the Parliamentary Front for the Regulatory Framework for the Legalization of Gaming and pre-candidate for mayor of Salvador State, federal deputy Bacelar. Thinking of the minister's position, the deputy has just requested an audience with Guedes to reinforce the defense of the activity.

Thinking of resuming the debate and negotiations on the subject, Bacelar requested a meeting with Guedes. The intention is to present legalization as a way out of the crisis in the post-pandemic period. If they were legalized, games could yield R$20 billion (US$3.65bn) in taxes per year. “Illegality favors clandestinity, money laundering and addiction. It is better to control and be in control of all this,” he said.

Bacelar highlights the generation of jobs as another positive point in the release of the activity. The sector must formalize 450 thousand workers of the ‘jogo do bicho’ and create at least 208 thousand new jobs in other modalities. In addition, more than 619 thousand indirect positions would be included with the whole production chain.

According to the deputy, Bahia has the potential to receive bingos, casinos, and bookmakers, since the state has a large flow of tourists. “This is an excellent opportunity for our state and, especially, for Brazil. Bets are a latent reality. Close your eyes to this is to lose revenue and jobs. It's setback,” he added.
