Regardless of what happens to the President of the Republic (impeachment or whatever), Brazil will emerge from the pandemic financially devastated and politically divided. And, above all, needing urgent projects to reactivate the economy.
I open a debate on the subject here, putting in place, now, some projects and changes that, in my view, can be quite interesting.
The first would be the legalization of casinos and the gaming sector.
It sounds incredible, but of the 193 UN member countries, only 37 prohibit gambling. And Brazil is one of them. In Latin America there are only two; Brazil and Cuba (no comments). The law dates from 1946, signed by then President Eurico Gaspar Dutra. Legend says that it was under pressure from the first lady, Dona Carmela Dutra who, due to her fervent religiosity, was called “Dona Santinha” (Lady Saint). The ban ended the activities of at least two famous places in Brazil: Cassino da Urca and Quitandinha, in Petrópolis.
Much of Brazil's tourist potential is wasted by banning casinos. The passion for gaming moves millions of people around the world. Of course, there are addicts, who destroy their assets in one night, but this small portion also exists in relation to alcohol, for example. And as far as I know, no one is considering closing our beer factories or wineries.
There are estimates that the gaming sector could generate between 10 and 20 billion dollars a year in Brazil, and generate about 100 thousand direct jobs. Before anyone questions these figures, it is worth saying that the universal Mecca of gambling, Las Vegas, alone, received US$ 29.8 billion from foreign tourists in 2018. And since we speak about Mecca, even among ultra-conservative Muslims countries there are those that have legalized gambling.
You just need a pen. And it can work very well.
