The smallest in 5 years

Unredeemed lottery prizes total US$57m in 2020 in Brazil

It may seem unlikely that anyone win the lottery and not collect the prize. However, cases like this are so common that, in 2020 alone, R$ 311.9 million (US$57m) in prizes were no longer redeemed, according to data from Caixa Econômica Federal. The value, however, is 6% lower than the accumulated in 2019 and the lowest in 5 years. By law, the money is transferred in full to the Student Financing Fund (Fies).

The forgotten value of Mega-Sena, Lotofácil, Quina, Lotomania, Timemania, Duplo Sena, Loteca, Lotogol and Federal prizes was the lowest of the last 5 years in nominal terms (without considering inflation). Even so, the not redeemed prizes in this period reach R$ 1.62 billion (US$296m).

Where does the money go?

When the winners do not withdraw the prize within 90 days, the amounts are transferred in full to the Student Financing Fund (Fies). According to Caixa, the rules apply to all lottery modalities.

Fies is the federal funding program for students to pursue higher education at private universities. This year, registrations can be made between January 26th and 29th.

Caixa added that it "constantly" informs about the deadlines and ways of receiving the prizes. "To disclose information about receiving prizes, posters are used in lottery shops, messages on betting ads, on the original bet ticket and on Caixa's website," the entity informed.

Transfer of collections

Like the prizes not redeemed, Caixa is also responsible for passing on the collections generated by the bets. The amounts are distributed to areas such as Culture, Health, Education, Security, Sports, Security, and others. "In addition to fueling the dreams of millions of gamblers, Loterias Caixa is an important source of resources to foster social development in Brazil," says the institution.

Caixa has not yet released the final balance of the collection of federal lotteries in 2020. In the first nine months of last year, the sale of betting tickets totaled revenue of R$ 11.8 billion (US$2.15bn), which represents a decrease of 2 % compared to the same period in 2019, when lotteries raised R$ 12.1 billion (US$2.21bn).
