Brazilian senator demands more lottery inspection to avoid money laundering

Senator Alvaro Dias (Pode-PR) again demanded measures to prevent federal lotteries from being used to launder money. He is the author of Bill 62/2007) that requires the identification of award winners and the filing of records for five years. The proposal has already been approved in the Senate and is awaiting a vote in the Chamber of Deputies. 'We’ve seen that a citizen had won more than 600 times in the lottery,' said the senator.

Senator Alvaro Dias again demanded measures to prevent federal lotteries from being used to launder money. On Thursday last week took place Mega da Virada, which distributes over R$300 million (US$57m) in prizes.

Dias recalled that the Budget CPI showed that lottery prizes were used by deputies to justify “generous” bank accounts.

“We’ve seen that a citizen had won more than 600 times in the lottery. 600 times! You can remember, some certainly remember deputy João Alves, convicted in the Budget CPI. Denounced and convicted,” said the senator of Pode do Paraná party with information from the body responsible for monitoring suspected money laundering activities, Coaf, which may indicate the continuity of the scheme.

The Senate has already approved a bill by Senator Alvaro Dias that requires the identification of lottery winners and the filing of records for five years. The proposal is awaiting a vote in the Chamber of Deputies.

Alvaro Dias says he doesn't believe in another lucky guy, but rather in the existence of a crime: “This one overcame professor João Alves. Because this one has won more than 600 times. But he was not alone. Another won more than 250 times, another hundred times, in several lotteries on the same day.”
